General:
Perennial herb from a branching woody stem-base atop a taproot; stems several, tufted, ascending to erect, 10-50 cm tall, smooth below, hairy to glandular-hairy above especially in the inflorescence.
Leaves:
Opposite, entire or obscurely toothed; basal leaves oblong-spoon-shaped and stalked, smooth; stem leaves narrowly lanceolate to oblong, unstalked, the upper leaves somewhat glandular-hairy.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a leafy-bracted, terminal cluster of several whorls of stalked flowers; corollas pale violet to purplish or pinkish, rarely white, tubular, 2-3 cm long, 2-lipped, the upper lip 2-lobed, the lower lip 3-lobed, the lobes hairy inside; calyces 7-11 mm long, densely hairy, 5-lobed, the lobes nearly distinct, lanceolate, pointy-tipped; fertile stamens 4, the anthers horseshoe-shaped, smooth; sterile stamen bearded more than half its length.
Fruits:
Capsules, elliptic, abruptly long pointy-tipped, 6-10 mm long; seeds numerous.
